  1. Determine what the requirements are for the key position and create profiles that outline responsibilities. The experience, education, career progress, and future career interests of managerial candidates should also be reviewed;
  2. The performance of prospective managers should be assessed to determine whether they are promotable or not and identify developmental objectives to prepare for advancement opportunities. Performance should be evaluated based on traditional goals and standards. Developmental objectives might include seminars, training programs, special projects, or temporary assignments.
