The Homeland Security Act (2002)

This Cabinet-level organization (Department of Homeland Security) was created by Congress and President George W. Bush to consolidate security efforts related to protecting U.S. geography. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is a part of this department. The E-Verify system resides here. Used by federal contractors as part of their affirmative action obligations and other private employers on a voluntary basis, the system is intended to assist in the rapid verification of Social Security numbers (SSNs) and confirm that the individual attached to the SSN has a valid right to work in this country.
